An interview with Louise Casemore.

Describe your show in one sentence.

It’s like “American Beauty”, but with more whiskey.

Okay, now that we’re intrigued… what’s the longer description of your show?

GEMINI was written specifically for the tequila cellar of El Cortez to explore the peculiar world of daytime bar patrons, and the bonds and dependency that develops between people with no one else to talk to.

One of them is wishing they were somewhere else.

One of them is thinking about death.

Both of them are lying.

There is an uncomfortable exchange of money.

There is poetry in the middle of chaos.

It is also a love story. Though not an uplifting one.

What it isn’t about, is a drinking problem. So everyone can just relax.

What interested you about the relationship between bartenders and daytime bar patrons?

Having worked in the bar industry myself for a number of years, I have always been piqued by the strange intimacy that can develop among patrons and staff over time. There is a very strange closeness that develops with people in those environments, so I wanted to explore the line where that begins to blur.

Where does the show’s title, Gemini, come from?

Gemini is in reference to a myth surrounding two lovers who have many differences and much chaos between them but still fit together in a way that defies logic. It is explained by a spell that causes their hearts to reconnect each night while their bodies sleep next to each other, waking each morning with a love like never before.

Anything else you want audiences to know about the show?

It is a new work, and will be featuring Vern Thiessen’s return the Edmonton stage after over a decade!
