Edmonton downstage | 01.11.16

Welcome to 2016! I hope you all had an awesome end to 2015 and are refreshed, relaxed and ready for all the awesome theatre we’ve got coming up in 2016! Speaking of which – here we go…

  • Opening this week and next:
    • Chelsea Hotel: The Songs of Leonard Cohen opens at the Citadel January 13 and runs until January 24
    • Darrin Hagen and Trevor Schmidt’s play, Flora & Fawna’s Field Trip! (with Fleurette) is presented by Northern Light Theatre and runs January 15 – 23.
    • Shadow Theatre’s Bravo by Blaine Newton runs at The Backstage Theatre January 20 – February 7.
    • Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? runs at the Citadel Theatre January 23 – February 13.
  • A couple people wrote about what they were looking forward to in 2016 last week – Kristen wrote about what she’s hoping to see in January and Liz Nicholls previewed what’s coming up in the next half of Edmonton’s theatre season.
    • Liz also wrote about a few newcommers we should all be watching.
  • What It Is Podcast is back at it for 2016 with Episode 93 with guests Bob Baker and James MacDonald.
  • Where Edmonton talks to Darrin Hagen and Trevor Schmidt about the show they’ve got coming up in February, Klondykes.
  • Nominations for the Mayor’s Celebration of the Arts are open until January 25!
  • The City of Edmonton has put forth a call for nominations for the Hall of Fame & Awards of Distinction, which “recognizes citizens who, through their contributions in arts and culture, community service, and sports, or through extraordinary service to their communities have made exemplary contributions to the quality of life in Edmonton.”
  • L’Unithéâtre’s 2016-2017 season will feature Great Notions in Small Rooms (or, De grandes idées dans de petites salles) – “a launching pad for new and innovative creators in our community”. Submissions are due June 3.
  • Catch the Keys’ upcoming production of Ursa Major, opening at the end of January, needs a little extra help getting on its feet. Donate to their Indiegogo campaign – or encourage a friend to do so – to help bring this show to the stage.
  • Punctuate! Theatre is also doing some fundraising. All proceeds from the “throwdown” on January 16 from 7:00 – 2:00 a.m. at Rosario’s Pub will benefit the company’s upcoming production of Hannah Moscovitch’s This is War.

I’m heading down to the High Performance Rodeo this coming weekend (one of my theatre dreams coming true! Hopefully PuSH next year!), so there won’t be an Edmonton downstage next week. Enjoy the next couple weeks – they’ll be good!
