Edmonton downstage | 10.19.2015

Happy election day, people! I hope you all have or will make your voice heard in Canada’s 42nd election.

  • Opening this week:
    • Dead Centre of Town is back for another frightful year – this time at Fort Edmonton Park. Catch their shows October 21 – 24 and 28 – 31. There are multiple performances each night, but some dates are already sold out, so get your tickets early.
      • Wondering what this year’s performance holds? Check out my preview interview with writer and co-producer, Megan Dart.
    • Edmonton Opera’s The Merry Widow plays October 24, 27, and 29 at the Jubilee Auditorium.
  • If you’re interested in Rosemary Rowe’s The Good Bride, presented by Northern Light Theatre – I’ve got some good news for you! There was a ton of content about the show put out this past week:
    •  Check out my preview and review.
    • Northern Light Theatre published Trevor Schmidt’s interview with playwright Rosemary Rowe.
    • The What It Is podcast’s latest episode includes an interview with Trevor Schmidt and actress Arielle Rombough.
  • Speaking of the What It Is podcast, I’m so happy that Karen interviewed Taylor and Brian – two-thirds of the team behind the podcast. Check out the Seen and Heard YEG podcast to hear all about the behind-the-scenes of the show.
  • Not only did Northern Light Theatre open their first show of the season last week, they also celebrated their 40th anniversary, which Liz wrote about in the Journal. It’s an interesting read about “the spirited little theatre”.
  • Kristen’s been busy writing – check out her thoughts on The Hothouse Prince and Walterdale’s Ravenscroft & L’Uni Théâtre’s Les Blues des Oubliées.
  • Also busy writing & vlogging is the University of Alberta Drama Department’s online magazine – Curious Arts. Check out their videos and blogs about Beyond Therapy.
  • The Varscona’s Prizeo raffle brought in $131,814 towards the rebuild of the Varscona! Congrats to Jennifer Mills who won lunch with Nathan Fillion. Read more about the raffle and upcoming capital campaign in the Varscona’s newsletter.
  • And finally, we’re 5 days away from SkirtOberfest, the fundraiser I’m helping to organize for the SkirtsAfire herArts Festival. Tickets are $30 in advance, and with your ticket you get tacos, a tasting of three sipping tequilas, and entertainment from the Yana Loo Trio, Kimberely MacGregor, a reading from a play SkirtsAfire is developing (The Mommy Monologues) and a spoken word reading. Plus, a cash bar and a kickin’ silent auction. I hope to see you there! Tickets and more information is on YEGLive.ca.
