Before we dive into what’s happening in the theatre world, I want to thank Karen Unland of Seen and Heard in Edmonton for giving me a chance to blab about what I write about here at After the House Lights. Check out episode 10 of the Seen and Heard YEG podcast, where her and I chat about theatre and blogging. Karen also publishes a weekly roundup of interesting blogs and podcasts and has a newsletter you can sign up for. Now, on to what’s happening in Edmonton theatre this week:
- Opening this week:
- Theatre Yes’ production of Bone Cage by Catherine Banks, running September 24 – October 4. I’ve been excited about this show since my interview with the director of the show (and Artistic Director of Theatre Yes), Heather Inglis.
- This weekend is one of my favourite times of year in our artistic community – Alberta Culture Days! Check out everything that’s happening on the Alberta Culture Days website and make the most of all the events happening September 25 – 27! Some of the things I’m looking forward to are the HeART Beat Party at the Citadel and Nuit Blanche. The Edmonton Opera also always puts on a good event during Culture Days and Pro Coro has a free concert on Sunday. That’s just some of what’s happening, tweet at me (@jennamarynowski) or comment below to tell me what you’re looking forward to.
- Speaking of podcasts, on the latest Dirt City Limits, Liz Nicholls catches up with Kristi Hansen and Murray Utas of Azimuth Theatre about what they’ve got planned for the upcoming season.
- And one more podcast piece of news – the What It Is Podcast release episode 85: Theatre Season Peeps, interviewing Neil Kuefler, Alyson Dicey, Andy Northrup (from Bone Cage) and Stewart Lemoine (about the Varscona rebuild and Teatro’s The Hothouse Prince).
- Theatre Network is having a Cinq à Sept Friendraiser October 1 at their new venue – The Roxy on Gateway. Find out about their new venue, upcoming season (which I also wrote about) and meet some cool theatre people, including Theatre Network’s staff and board of directors. RSVP to Theatre Network by September 25 at info@theatrenetwork.ca or 780.453.2440.
- Congratulations to Annette Loiselle, who is a finalist for the Christopher Plummer Fellowship Award of Excellence, presented by the Shakespeare Globe Centre of Canada. Annette is one of the founders of the Freewill Shakespeare Festival (and the SkirtsAfire Festival) and has taken on a number of Shakespeare’s more challenging roles during her career. Read more about the announcement on Theatre Alberta’s blog.
- Newly named Walterdale Theatre Artistic Director Anne Marie Szucs was interviewed by Edmonton Women’s Magazine – I’m really looking forward to the season she’s planned for Walterdale!
- Catalyst Theatre’s September newsletter includes a look forward to their new venue, a look back at their old home, and a sneak-peak at an unexpected new project (!), opening October 24.
A note that after I gorge myself on Edmonton arts performances next weekend, I’m headed to Calgary to take in a bit of Calgary theatre with my friend Ana, who blogs as C-Town Playhouse, so there may not be an Edmonton Downstage next week, but I’ll be back the following week.
