Edmonton downstage | 09.07.2015

Happy Labour Day everyone! I hope you all enjoyed/are enjoying the long weekend, if you get one. I wasn’t able to catch Devour Content Here/Of Love and Wheat, which played this past weekend, but I did have two fabulous interviews last week – one with Bradley Moss about Theatre Network‘s Season 41 and one with Heather Inglis about Theatre Yes’ upcoming production of Catherine Bank’s Bone Cage (Sept. 24 – Oct. 4). So, look for those two articles on After the House Lights shortly. I grabbed a copy of Bone Cage through the Edmonton Public Library and am so excited to see Theatre Yes’ mounting of this show! Now, on to this week’s theatre news:

  • I mentioned I couldn’t get to Devour Content Here/Of Love and Wheat, but Louise of Ephemeral Pleasures did. Check out what she had to say. There’s one more show this afternoon at 2:30 at the Muttart Storage warehouse (10930 84 street).
  • My two favourite Edmonton arts podcasts kicked off their seasons last week:
    • Check out What It Is podcast’s episode 84: Season 4 Premier
      • Their annual survey is up too – tell them which episodes you loved, how often you listen to it, share some tips… they want your feedback!
    • I Don’t Get It also published Season 3 episode 1, where they talk about the Body in Question(s) 2, Canada Council’s recent Yes I Dance Survey, and preview what shows we can look forward to this year.
  • The Edmonton Arts Council’s weekly newsletter had lots of job postings, including a Business Manager/General Manager for Theatre Network.
  • Theatre Alberta’s September Theatre Buzz is up, and includes the launch of their Blue Bag Book Club – sign up and receive a bag of 10 randomly selected plays by Canadian playwrights. It sounds like it’s free, as long as you send Theatre Alberta photos of the plays (or selfies with them!). Yep, definitely signing up for this!
  • Workshop West unveiled their new logo and website this week.
  • Punctuate! Theatre’s September newsletter is out as well, and announces the High 5 Season Pass, which gets you in to performances by the companies New Music Edmonton,  Good Women Dance Collective, Punctuate! Theatre (This is War by Hannah Moscovitch! I’m so there!), Citié Ballet, and The Maggie Tree. With more and more companies doing interdisciplinary work, I’ve been looking for a pass just like this to help me expand my horizons more broadly than theatre, so I am all over this!
    • In other Punctuate! news – they are looking to hire their team of student interns. The internships are great for theatre or arts management students and pay $1000 through the Serving Communities Internship Program (SCiP).
  • Edmonton playwrights have until September 15 to submit to Walterdale Theatre’s From Cradle to Stage competition – the selected one act play(s) will get a fully produced run in May, in addition to access to a dramaturg.
  • A few theatre/arts-related festivals are coming up this weekend:
    • The Kaleido Family Arts Festival runs on 118 avenue September 11 – 13.
    •  The third annual Edmonton Burlesque Festival runs at the Royal Alberta Museum Theatre September 10 – 12.
  • Exciting news for the Varscona Rebuild! Concrete pouring started last week
