Describe your show in five words.
Wolves, Bears, Buffalo! Foolish man.
Okay, now that we’re intrigued… what’s the longer description?
The show is the true story of a three-week hike through the arctic wilderness — all alone with a broken arm. The audience shares in the mishaps, rewards, and introspection of an epic and probably ill-advised solo adventure. The perfect show for anyone who enjoys the outdoors (even vicariously)!
Your play is based on a true story – what made you decide to take the three-week hike that was the inspiration for this play?
At that time in my life, I was looking to challenge myself and especially to find meaning beyond the daily grind. What better way than to remove distractions, face nature on its own terms, and create lots of space for thinking! Without revealing too much of the story, the actual journey was almost an accident — a last minute inspiration just days before I set out.
These days people seem to avoid being alone – especially in the wilderness. What do you hope audiences walk away from your play with?
I hope that audiences are inspired to re-connect (or in some cases connect for the first time) with nature. We have created a world in which every second of our time is occupied by distractions — nature is the antidote for that. Otherwise, I hope it encourages people to make some silly, risky choices once in a while.
Anything else you want audiences to know about the show?
It’s funnier than it sounds!
Bonus question: Any names you want to drop who have been involved in your show?
Well…The script first took shape in a workshop with Canadian theatre treasure Daniel MacIvor. Later, Fringe god TJ Dawe was my dramaturge. Each of them had a lot of influence on the development of this project.
